The Executive Roundtable, hosted by Nexumtech in Rome alongside WAS#22, brought together global telecom leaders to discuss the most pressing challenges and opportunities shaping the messaging industry.

From A2P monetization and traffic transparency to the growing threat of AIT, one message stood out clearly: operators who combine visibility, fairness, and innovation will define the next era of business messaging.

Latest Trends in Business Messaging Keynote by Nick Lane, CEO of Mobilesquared

ree

Nick Lane, CEO of Mobilesquared, explored the evolution of SMS, RCS, WhatsApp, and Mobile Identity services, outlining how operators can remain competitive amid rapid OTT migration and pricing pressures.

The keynote emphasized that while global A2P SMS traffic is projected to decline significantly by 2029, smart operators that adopt differentiated pricing and protect their routes can sustain traffic and even grow spend by >30%.

According to Mobilesquared’s findings:

  • Price transparency is critical. Each $0.01 increase beyond a $0.10 ITR leads to roughly 2.8% traffic loss, underscoring the need for data-backed rate cards that balance yield and volume.

  • RCS is emerging as the next growth frontier, forecasted to grow by 4,500% from 2024–2029, reaching 1.75 trillion messages and $14 billion in spend.

  • Network APIs could represent a $15 billion opportunity, but only if operators collaborate rather than compete.

Lane concluded that the right CPaaS partnerships can help operators seamlessly transition from SMS → RCS → API ecosystems, unlocking true omnichannel monetization.

AIT: The Sugar High of A2P Revenue Keynote by Uros Mijatovic, COO of Mitto

ree

Uros Mijatovic, COO of Mitto, addressed the urgent threat of Artificially Inflated Traffic (AIT) on the messaging ecosystem.

He explained how AIT generates fake, non-human message volumes that may temporarily boost revenue but ultimately destroy long-term trust and profitability.

Key insights included:

  • AIT is a silent killer: it damages reputation, impacts trust, and drives brands away from operator channels.

  • The A2P value chain is broken: too many intermediaries create opacity and enable fraud. Direct, transparent interconnections between MNOs and OTTs that send the traffic are the only sustainable model.

  • The true cost of AIT includes loss of brand confidence, blacklisting, and traffic migration to OTT alternatives such as WhatsApp or Flash Calls.

Mitto’s message was clear: sustainable growth depends on fraud detection, traffic recovery, and transparency.

Protecting Revenue at Scale Keynote by Giovanni Benini, Partner at GTC

ree

Giovanni Benini, Partner at GTC, presented findings that reveal up to 50% of globally delivered SMS are either underpriced or bypass mobile termination rates (MTR) which is a stark indicator of uncontrolled revenue leakage.

Benini emphasized that network security is no longer a technical cost, but rather a revenue line item.

The presentation highlighted that:

  • Fraud prevention and transparency directly translate to revenue recovery.

  • Collaboration is the only scalable defense: when operators, technology partners, and auditors unite, fraudsters move elsewhere.

  • Verified traffic equals verifiable revenue: enabling operators to charge with confidence and detect underpayment instantly.
