Collaboration, Network Protection, and Revenue Sustainability in Messaging Nexumtech was pleased to welcome Giovanni Benini, Partner at GTC, to our Executive Roundtable during GSMA WAS#22 in Rome. During the event, Giovanni shared his perspective on the importance of cooperation within the messaging ecosystem and the critical role that network protection plays in long-term revenue sustainability.
Giovanni emphasised that cooperation is fundamental in what he described as a close-knit messaging ecosystem. Open dialogue, collaboration, and regular engagement between industry stakeholders, he noted, are essential to maintaining a healthy and functional ecosystem.
A key focus of the discussion was the impact of network protection on revenue performance. Giovanni explained that GTC conducts systematic testing across approximately 100 mobile networks, using test SMS traffic to assess delivery, modification, and pricing behaviour. These insights provide a clear picture of how well networks are protected and help identify cases where inadequate protection leads to ongoing revenue leakage.
He highlighted that networks which take protection seriously and act on testing insights, often in close coordination with internal or external firewall managers, are far better positioned to protect revenues and monetise traffic effectively. In contrast, poorly protected networks continue to lose value on a daily basis, representing a significant missed opportunity.
Giovanni also reflected on insights gained during the roundtable discussions, noting a strong understanding among participating mobile network operators of how Artificially Inflated Traffic (AIT) accelerates the decline of SMS rather than supporting long-term value. At the same time, he expressed confidence after seeing shared recognition of the importance of proper firewall management and testing, reinforcing his belief that SMS still has a future when managed correctly.
